Today, I turned Kim Myeong-ok’s poem “The Tether” into a song and video.
As I read the poem and worked on the piece, I found myself thinking of a dog I had many years ago, and I spent much of the day immersed in sadness. A little while ago, I went for a walk with the dogs who share my life now. Perhaps life is, in the end, a matter of leaving and remaining, letting go and enduring.
“The Tether” portrays the time endured by a rope that once held a living creature close, then remained behind after that life was gone. Quietly, the poem captures the warmth of a vanished presence, the loneliness of what remains, and the faint stirrings of life beginning to move again even in the midst of sorrow.
Below, I have included the original poem, followed by a brief interpretation prepared with the help of my AI assistant.

The Tether
Kim Myeong-ok
Downstairs,
there is a new owner.
The doghouse beneath the pine tree
has disappeared as well.
Gone, too, is the dog
whose ankles grew thick
from running with the wind tugging at its ribbon,
its bark a deep, dark blue,
leaving behind only the tether
fastened firmly
to the foot of the tree.
Between the dog and the tree,
the taut days
that danced their tug-and-pull
have fallen slack upon the ground.
Overnight,
the tether
lost the warm nape of a neck.
Looking down at it,
the pine says nothing.
For half a century,
it has stood in that same place,
watching lives,
known and unknown,
come and stay awhile,
then wander away
as dust,
as wind,
until they pour down again as rain,
and perhaps then,
clear to the bone,
it longs to cry out,
Woof, woof.
Along the tether,
one end flung down against the earth,
ants begin to climb.
The cry,
and the tether too,
are swelling.

▶ About the Poem
Kim Myeong-ok’s “The Tether” focuses on what remains after a living presence has disappeared.
The dog and its house are gone, but the tether beneath the pine tree remains. Once stretched tight with the dog’s movement, it now lies slack on the ground. The image of “the tether that lost the warm nape of a neck” turns an ordinary object into something that seems to carry memory and loss.
The silent pine tree has witnessed many lives come and go over the years, and its imagined bark seems to hold the grief of all those departures.
Near the end, ants begin to climb the abandoned tether. This small movement of life changes the mood of the poem. Sorrow remains, but life quietly begins again.
In the poem, the tether becomes more than a rope. It comes to symbolize memory, connection, longing, and the invisible bond that remains even after someone has gone.
