Fans of An Unmarried Woman (1978) and Talia Balsam in Mad Men cannot miss this family drama about a woman, a rural home in the Catskills and a marriage that ends with a confession. A bittersweet, character-driven drama that chooses emotional truth over melodrama. Lila is an artist and teacher who has built a modest rural paradise in New York's Catskill Mountains with her writer husband, Edgar. Soon after their teenage daughters head off on summer adventures, Edgar reveals that he has started a new family with another woman, leaving Lila alone for a season of anger, revenge and self-rediscovery. Directed by Hilary Brougher, the film stars Talia Balsam as Lila, with Scott Cohen (Gilmore Girls) as Edgar, Michael Oberholtzer and Midori Francis. Stories of women rebuilding their lives after a marriage ends moved to the centre of American cinema in the 1970s. Paul Mazursky's An Unmarried Woman (1978) followed a New York woman whose husband leaves her for someone else; it was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Picture, and Jill Clayburgh was nominated for Best Actress. The setting adds its own history. The Catskills have inspired American artists since Washington Irving set Rip Van Winkle in them in 1819 and painter Thomas Cole made a trip there in 1825 that helped launch the Hudson River School, the first major American school of landscape painting. For a film about an artist who must start over, the choice of landscape could hardly be more fitting. The Catskills have featured in American popular culture in many other ways. In the mid-Twentieth century the region's resorts, nicknamed the Borscht Belt, hosted New York families on summer holidays and launched many comedians, and Dirty Dancing (1987) is set at one such resort in the summer of 1963. In August 1969 the Woodstock festival was held at a dairy farm in Bethel, in the Catskills region, and became a symbol of a generation. The mountains have long been a place to escape the city, and a place where a reckoning cannot be avoided once the guests have left.
