Long before helicopters hunted feral cattle in New Mexico's Gila Wilderness, wild cattle ran through the Texas brush by the millions, took over the highlands of Hawaii, and survived for over a century on a remote island off Alaska. The cow is the gentlest big animal most of us will ever see. So how does it turn into an animal that even helicopters struggled to round up? From Spanish longhorns and the original "mavericks" to King Kamehameha's cattle, the Siberian-blooded herd of Chirikof Island, and the unbranded cattle of the Gila — this is the story of domestication running backward. What would you do with the wild cattle of Chirikof — remove them for the birds, or leave the herd alone? Tell me in the comments. They Were Never Supposed to Be Here. Sixteen images are AI reconstructions (the aurochs, early cattle herders, Spanish ships unloading cattle, wild longhorns, Vancouver's cattle landing in Hawaii, the Chirikof herd, and feral cattle in the Gila canyons) and are labeled "AI reconstruction" on screen. No real photos or video of the Gila or Chirikof feral cattle are shown — those scenes are reconstructions. One short stock clip of a canyon river (12:37) is AI-generated. All other footage and photos are real. #WildCattle #FeralCattle #InvasiveAmerica #GilaWilderness #NewMexico #TexasLonghorn #Longhorn #Maverick #Paniolo #Hawaii #Alaska #ChirikofIsland #Cattle #InvasiveSpecies #WildlifeDocumentary
