May 17, 1963. A small urn crosses the Indian border, sent back by the Chinese army with full military honours. Inside are the ashes of one Indian soldier. Why would an enemy salute a prisoner of war? The answer lies on a frozen ridge at 15,000 feet, at Bum La, on the morning of October 23, 1962.
What this video covers
This 2D animated Hindi documentary tells the true story of Subedar Joginder Singh, PVC, of the 1st Battalion, Sikh Regiment. It follows him from a farming village in Punjab to the icy heights of the North-East Frontier Agency during the 1962 Sino-Indian War. His small platoon held the IB Ridge near Bum La and Tongpen La against three waves of Chinese attack, each about 200 soldiers strong. When the ammunition ran out, he ordered the survivors to fix bayonets and charge. He was captured, died in Chinese custody, and was posthumously awarded the Param Vir Chakra, India’s highest wartime gallantry award.

Why this matters
1962 is remembered as a painful chapter in India’s military history, but it also produced stories of extraordinary courage that deserve to be told properly. Subedar Joginder Singh’s stand is one of them. He had no winter clothing, little ammunition and no hope of reinforcement, and he still chose to stay. His story reminds us that behind every medal there is a family, a village and a price that never appears in a citation. For every Indian who has ever felt pride in the uniform, this story is worth knowing.
