R250,000. Unpaid legal fees. A protection-fee allegation. And a witness facing difficult questions.
In Part 5 of this testimony before the Madlanga Commission, the questions around money become even more uncomfortable.
The Commission examines the ongoing dispute over legal fees, the alleged R250,000 payment arrangement, and an attorney's complaints that he had still not been paid.
The witness maintains that his involvement was limited.
But the messages raise questions about that explanation.
Who was responsible for the payments? And what exactly was the witness's role?
Then the Commission returns to the allegations concerning Kwagga Fontaine.
A witness's statement describes an alleged arrangement in which a business was expected to pay a protection fee to operate in the area.
The allegation is put directly to the witness.
He asks to invoke his right against self-incrimination.
But the Commission points him back to his own sworn statement, in which he denied ever participating in unlawful activity.
And the central question becomes:
Can he maintain that denial while refusing to answer questions about the allegation?
This exchange brings the tension between sworn testimony, the right against self-incrimination, and the Commission's search for answers into sharp focus.
Remember: an allegation is not proof of guilt, and invoking privilege is not proof of wrongdoing. The evidence and the answers must be examined fairly.
Watch Part 5 and follow the questions as they unfold.
