The funniest moments on screen come from actors who refuse to believe they're being funny. Jack Griffo makes that case here, and Violet McGraw describes walking out of a lifetime of horror films and into her very first comedy.
Griffo spent five seasons as Max Thunderman on Nickelodeon's The Thundermans, and McGraw grew up on screen in The Haunting of Hill House and M3GAN. Now they share the screen in Double Trouble, a Las Vegas holiday heist comedy with Violet's real-life sister Madeleine McGraw and Andrew Koji, opening in select theatres Oct. 9.
Violet explains why horror never prepared her for comic timing, and how much of her performance ended up improvised once the cameras rolled. Jack breaks down the one rule he trusts above all others in comedy, and why playing a scene completely straight is what gives the audience permission to laugh. The two also talk about stepping behind the camera. Violet carried what she learned producing The Curse of the Necklace with her sister into this set, and Jack describes coming back to The Thundermans as an executive producer alongside Kira Kosarin, a job he calls one big puzzle piece. Jack also looks back on his teenage years on a multicam sitcom, where producers would hand him seven, eight, nine changes between takes. Violet closes on the person she credits for getting her this far.
Stay for the sitcom notes that turned every film set since into the easy part.
