Electronegativity: It is a measurement for the atom's ability to attract the electrons of the chemical bond towards itself for longer period of time. Dissociation of table salt (NaCl) salt in water: On adding sodium chloride crystals (ionic compound) to water: Sodium chloride molecules are dissociated into (Na+) and (Cl-) ions. Water molecules surround the ions, where: • Positive sodium ion is surrounded by partially negative oxygen atoms. • Negative chloride ion is surrounded by partially positive hydrogen atoms.
