Farage says £72million donations to Reform UK are ‘legal today’

Nigel Farage and Reform UK may have to hand back millions in donations if a new law goes through parliament. Farage's crypto billionaire donors, Ben Delo and Christopher Harborne, have donated £72 million. But they lived abroad until earlier this year. Farage acknowledged the donations are only legal as the law stands today. But the government needs to work out whether voters would see the retrospective nature of the new law as a good way to stop democracy being bought or as a government using its parliamentary power against a democratic challenger. The bill currently in parliament would force newly returned UK residents to wait a year before making substantial political donations, and the new law will be backdated to March, as suggested by the author of a report that prompted the change. That potentially makes the Reform donations illegal. Communities Secretary Angela Rayner accused the two men of "trying to buy our democracy".
