How do you chase rock and roll without losing your family, your voice or yourself? Santa Cruz native James Durbin, who finished fourth on American Idol Season 10 and fronted Quiet Riot, tells us how he found the balance. James starts with a kindergarten drawing that says "I love to listen to rock and roll," and what he learned from his late father, Santa Cruz bassist Willie Durbin, about which path not to take. He takes us inside the real American Idol: 32 hours in line at AT&T Park, getting laid off right before his audition, meeting Steven Tyler before the judges' round, singing Dream On with his blessing, and refusing to let producers pick his songs. He also credits his wife Heidi, who covered their Live Oak apartment in sticky-note affirmations. Then he gets honest about the post-Idol offers he turned down, and the Quiet Riot years: Heavy Montreal in front of 50,000 people, a bratwurst festival in Sheboygan, and four days away for one show's pay. James talks about what fame cost his family, why wisdom comes from mistakes, and how The Lost Boys grew from a private beach party into a Santa Cruz favorite. He also shares the night he stood on the Boardwalk stage, imagined a sea of people, and later sang there to a crowd of about 30,000 people on the beach. We close with his single Paradise, a reggae rock follow-up to Capitola on My Mind.
