Join me for a very stormy day exploring Beijing, China! 🇨🇳🌪️
I begin in the historic Nanluoguxiang (南锣鼓巷) and hutong area, with strong winds sweeping through Beijing following the severe weather that affected the city during my visit in April 2025.
From old Beijing, I then travel across the city to one of its most recognisable modern landmarks — the Beijing National Stadium, better known as the Bird’s Nest (鸟巢).
Built for the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games and used again for the 2022 Winter Olympics, I get the opportunity to actually go inside the enormous stadium and walk around its interior, taking a closer look at this extraordinary piece of modern Beijing architecture.
Afterwards, it's back to everyday Beijing life. I enjoy a relaxing Chinese foot massage, meet a rather friendly local cat 🐈, and later head back into the hutongs for an evening at Modernista, a distinctive bar and live-music venue hidden among Beijing's traditional alleyways.
It's a day that shows several very different sides of the Chinese capital — historic hutongs, extreme weather, Olympic architecture, local life and Beijing after dark.
