It meant playing barefoot in the river, sitting under an old bridge with neighbors, waiting for the evening breeze, and sharing a simple meal with family. But as life becomes faster, many of these moments are slowly disappearing. In this episode of Lost Hometown, I travel to Liujiaqiao Ancient Village in Hubei, China, searching for a summer that still remains in people’s memories. Along the Baiquan River, I meet the people who continue to live with an old rhythm of life — villagers who stay connected to their land, a family running a small restaurant for more than 30 years, and children who return home during summer to help in the kitchen. Through traditional foods like Tongshan Baotuo, wood-fired tofu, and crispy rice cooked over a traditional stove, I discover that food is never only about taste. A hometown flavor carries the memory of a family. It carries the stories of the people who made it. And it carries the places we may leave behind, but never truly forget. As more young people leave villages for cities, one question remains: When we go far away, what part of our hometown stays with us forever?
