On February 16, 1945, American paratroopers approached Corregidor with a startling estimate: just 850 Japanese troops held the island. Their landing zones were a shattered parade ground and a narrow, sloping golf course perched above cliffs. Strong winds could carry a man past either field before he reached the ground.
Among the men aboard the C-47s was Harry Akune, a Japanese American Army interpreter who had never jumped from an airplane. His helmet and equipment failed to reach the plane; he went out with a borrowed carbine and one magazine. Once on the island, captured documents would force the Americans to rethink what they believed they were facing.
This is the story of the 503rd Parachute Regimental Combat Team’s dangerous return to the island America had surrendered in 1942—and of the interpreter whose work changed the battle.
