Why are you sitting by the stove like this? Aren't you going to cook? Seema (distressed): Ma-ji, what’s the point of lighting the stove? I needed water to cook, but we don't have any left. Whatever was there has run out. How can I make dal and rice without water? Jamuna (surprised): What? No water? But all the buckets were full this morning. Where did it all go? That much water should have lasted until evening. Seema (concerned): I thought so too—that it would last until evening—but it didn't. It’s just so hot these days; the whole family's water consumption has gone up. I really don't know what to do right now. Our tubewell has stopped pumping water altogether. Jamuna (thoughtfully): Alright, wait a moment, daughter-in-law. I'll be right back. Seema (calmly): Okay, Ma-ji; I’ll do some other chores in the meantime. (Jamuna returns with a bucket of water.) Jamuna (helpfully): Here, daughter-in-law. I had set this bucket of water aside. Why don't you use it to cook the meal? Seema (curiously): But Ma-ji, what had you saved this water for? Jamuna (affectionately): I had just kept it for my own bath. But cooking is more important right now, so go ahead and use it to make the dal and rice. Seema (satisfied): Alright, Ma-ji; I’ll light the stove right away. Mohan (returning from work, exhausted): Hey Ma, isn't there any water in any of the buckets here? Jamuna (troubled): No, son. There was a little water left, and I used it to cook the meal. There’s no water left now. Mohan (concerned): That’s a real problem. The water shortage has become severe in this heat. I needed some water to wash my hands. "Where am I supposed to wash my hands now?" Jamuna (helplessly): "What can I say, son? Just wipe your hands on a clean cloth. We won't get water until tomorrow morning now." Mohan (accepting the situation): "Alright, Ma. The food is being cooked, isn't it?" Jamuna (matter-of-factly): "Yes, it will be ready in a little while." (The next day) Seema (curiously): "Hey sister-in-law, our handpump is still yielding water, isn't it?" Radha (matter-of-factly): "Yes, sister-in-law, it is. But for the past few days, I’ve noticed the flow getting weaker." Seema (worriedly): "But why? Is our handpump about to break down?" Radha (uncertainly): "I don't know. It feels like it might stop working altogether soon." Seema (anxiously): "The mere thought of it worries me—if our handpump breaks down, where will we get water from?" Radha (agreeing): "That’s true. Many people in the village have handpumps that have already stopped working." Seema (hurriedly): "Let’s fill up our water quickly; otherwise, this one might stop working soon too." (A short while later, Seema had filled all the buckets and vessels, but in the meantime, the handpump had stopped yielding water. The next day, when not even a drop of water came out, everyone became distressed.) Radha (distressed): "Sister-in-law, there was absolutely no water from our handpump today. I think it has stopped working completely." Seema (worriedly): "The very thing I feared has happened. Where will we get water now?" (Thus, both Seema and Radha began to worry about their water supply. The question now was: where would their family get water? How would they come to rely on another handpump? And how would the sister-in-law and her brother's wife end up fighting over a new handpump? Would this conflict create a rift within the family?)
