The day before Faith's death, a neighbor grilled at a table right across from where she parked. Then the State asks who came, and when.
This is the Faith Hedgepeth murder trial in Durham County, North Carolina. Faith was a 19-year-old UNC student, found in her Chapel Hill apartment by her roommate. Miguel Enrique Salguero-Olivares is on trial on the charges, and he is presumed innocent. In Part 32, Day 8, a relative of the defendant by marriage finishes his testimony for the State. Then the State calls Luis Lopez, a neighbor who lived in Faith's apartment complex with his wife and about six brothers-in-law.
Start with the phone call. The relative says the defendant's mother called him a few weeks before he testified and asked him to tell the truth, because the two of them had never spent time together, "not even in a cookout." Then the State spends the rest of the Part on a cookout. Mr. Lopez says he "only saw her a couple of times," in the parking lot. He says the day before her death was his day off, that he and his wife grilled at a table she would park right across from, and that guests arrived one by one: brothers-in-law at about eight, nine and ten, and his wife's cousin, on foot from the same complex.
So why ask the defendant's relative about a cookout, and then call the man who hosted one? Nothing here says why that guest list matters. And about the call: if all the defendant's mother asked for was the truth, what is the jury meant to take from hearing about it? He is still on direct at the interpreter's break.
