Shadow work isn't what you think it is. It's grief work — and the life you can't seem to live is locked behind the grief you haven't let yourself feel. Most of us are carrying three things at once: an unmet self, an unlived life, and unexpressed grief we were never taught to name. The unmet self is who you learned it wasn't safe to be. The unlived life is the life that self never got to live. And the grief accumulates around both — quietly, for decades — until it comes out sideways as burnout, resentment, envy, numbness, rage, restlessness, addiction, a midlife crisis, or that chronic dissatisfaction that follows you no matter what you accomplish. We mistake the symptoms for the problem. In this solo episode of Grieving Awake, I explore why the unmet self doesn't live in your mind — she lives in your nervous system. Which is why you cannot positive-think your way into the unlived life, and you cannot command her out of hiding. The body overrides the thinking mind every day of the week. She isn't waiting to be found. She's waiting for safety. I share the story of the airport lounge, the glass of champagne, and the thought that nearly took me — you don't have to tell anybody — and what self-betrayal actually costs a body that is trying to learn it can trust you. We close with Carl Jung: nothing affects a child more than the unlived life of the parent. Your parents' unlived life shaped yours. Yours is shaping someone's now. We don't grieve the unlived life so we can stay in mourning for it. We grieve it so we can find the courage to live it.
