Niccolò Machiavelli is often remembered as the philosopher who taught rulers to be ruthless. But the real story is far more complicated.
Born in Renaissance Florence, Machiavelli witnessed political chaos, war, betrayal, shifting alliances, and the rise and fall of powerful rulers. His experiences eventually led him to write The Prince — a book that would become one of the most controversial works in political thought.
So who was Machiavelli really? Was he simply teaching rulers how to gain and keep power, or was he exposing politics exactly as it worked?
In this video, we explore Machiavelli’s life, his political career, The Prince, and the ideas that made his name synonymous with political cunning.
