From a small religious revival movement in northern Yemen to a powerful armed group capable of threatening Saudi Arabia, Israel and one of the world's most important shipping routes, the story of the Houthis is deeply connected to Yemen's own troubled history. In this video, we explore how Yemen was divided, how the two Yemens eventually united and fell into another civil war, how the Houthi movement emerged, and how Saudi Arabia, Iran and the wider world became involved in Yemen's conflict.
