George Rowlett (1941-2026), A Walmer Garden Bursting with Life (2026)

George Rowlett passed away unexpectedly at home on 18 June 2026. Aged 84 and still painting most days, the news was a profound shock, and what had originally been planned as an exhibition of recent work has now become an exhibition of his last paintings. They include studio still-lifes, self-portraits and what he encountered in the secluded garden outside of his studio in Walmer, Kent. As an artist who built his reputation on wholeheartedly painting his immediate surroundings en plein air the name George Rowlett conjures up images of London’s River Thames and the sweeping landscapes of Kent: the two places where he has lived and worked. But in recent years as the physical demands of cycling out into the landscape loaded up with everything necessary for a day’s work had become too difficult, his choice of subjects was closer to home and it was his own garden in particular that inspired a late period of extraordinary creative vitality.
