The Netherlands play in orange, but the Dutch flag is red, white and blue. Germany play in white, Japan in blue, Australia in gold, and none of those colours is on their flag today. We went back to the papers of the first matches to find out where each one came from. Eight national team colours: the Netherlands' orange, Australia's gold and green, Japan's blue, Germany's white and black, Scotland's primrose and pink, Uruguay's sky blue, Venezuela's wine red, and Germany's green. One came from an empire's flag, one maybe from a university boat race, one from a racehorse owner. And the famous story about Germany's green and Ireland doesn't survive the 1951 papers. Which national team colour makes the least sense to you? Tell us in the comments.
