Does everyone who prophesies hold the ministry of a prophet? What does the Bible mean by “the spirit of prophecy”? In this biblical teaching, Rev. Dr. Jamil Nasir examines the relationship between the Holy Spirit, prophetic gifts, and the ministry of prophets. Through his ongoing teaching, both in person and online, thousands of people are learning to understand these subjects in the light of Scripture. Drawing on examples from the Old and New Testaments, he explains that a person may prophesy through the enabling of the Holy Spirit without necessarily being called to the recognized ministry of a prophet. The distribution of spiritual gifts in 1 Corinthians 12:4–11 and the ministry of prophets in Ephesians 4:11–13 provide an important foundation for this distinction. Following Christ’s ascension, the promised Holy Spirit was poured out at Pentecost. Peter explained this event through Joel’s prophecy: sons and daughters would prophesy (Acts 2:16–18). Later, in Ephesus, when Paul laid his hands on about twelve disciples, the Holy Spirit came upon them, and they spoke in tongues and prophesied (Acts 19:1–7). The teaching also explores Revelation 19:10: “The testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy.” This passage places Jesus at the heart of prophetic witness. Prophecy inspired by the Holy Spirit bears faithful testimony to Christ and serves God’s purposes. Paul teaches that the Spirit distributes gifts according to His will, including prophecy. Therefore, bearing witness to Jesus and being filled with the Spirit do not automatically mean that every believer possesses the same gift or holds the ministry of a prophet. Prophecy should strengthen, encourage, and comfort the church, and prophetic messages must be weighed carefully (1 Corinthians 14:3, 29). Watch this teaching to deepen your understanding of prophecy, grow in biblical discernment, and discover how spiritual gifts serve the church and glorify Jesus Christ. #SpiritOfProphecy #GiftOfProphecy #HolySpirit #BiblicalTeaching #DrJamilNasir #ChristianTeaching
