On October 7, 1966, Doris Duke was behind the wheel of a 2-ton station wagon when it crushed her designer Eduardo Tirella against the gates of Rough Point, her 49-room Newport mansion, and killed him. The police closed the case in roughly 96 hours without a sobriety test, and 8 days later her donations to Newport began to flow. A 1971 jury found her solely negligent, yet the award came to about $75,000 against an estate that would reach $1.2 billion by her death in 1993.
