She is neither the living nor the dead. She is the one who remains when life is gone. In Norse mythology, Hel is the daughter of Loki and the giantess Angrboða, and sister to Fenrir and Jörmungandr. When the gods learned of the three children of Loki, they feared what they might become. Fenrir was bound. Jörmungandr was cast into the sea. And Hel was sent to the realm that would bear her name. There, she became the keeper of those who died outside the glory of battle. Her realm lay beneath the world of the living — cold, distant and silent. Those who arrived there were not necessarily warriors who had fallen with weapons in their hands. Hel's domain belonged to another kind of death: the old, the sick, and those whose lives simply reached their end. And then came Baldr. The beloved god was killed, and the gods pleaded with Hel to release him. Hel agreed to one condition: If everything in the world wept for Baldr, he could return. The gods sent messengers across the worlds. Gods wept. Humans wept. Animals wept. The world itself seemed to mourn. But one voice refused. The story ends with Baldr remaining in Hel's realm. And this is where our song begins. “Half of Life, Half of Death” is not simply a song about a goddess of the dead. It is about the boundary between two worlds — the moment when someone is no longer part of the living world, yet has not disappeared from memory. Our Hel is therefore imagined as a figure suspended between opposites: life and death, warmth and cold, light and darkness, grief and silence. The music video follows this interpretation through fog-covered landscapes, funeral fires, dark halls, winter forests and the lonely figure of Hel herself. She does not need to chase the living. The dead already know the way to her. 🩸 HEL — HALF OF LIFE, HALF OF DEATH A dark Nordic song by Shamanic Naives. Listen to the song. Enter the realm beneath the world.
