Human Rights on Trial in the War Against Iran (Episode 2: Aggression and the Use of Force Crisis) The use of force remains one of the most contested questions in international law. As states increasingly invoke security, self-defense, and counterterrorism narratives to justify military action, the central challenge remains: where are the legal limits on state power? The specialized interview series “Human Rights on Trial in the War Against Iran”, an academic initiative by the Human Rights Institute of the University of Isfahan (HRIUI), examines the legal, humanitarian, and institutional dimensions of the 2026 armed conflict involving the United States, Israel, and Iran through conversations with leading international law scholars and practitioners. In this episode, HRIUI speaks with Professor Ben Saul, Challis Chair of International Law at the University of Sydney and United Nations Special Rapporteur on the promotion and protection of human rights and fundamental freedoms while countering terrorism, to discuss the legal implications of the U.S.–Israeli military actions against Iran. The conversation explores the prohibition on the use of force under the UN Charter, contested claims of self-defense and preventive security, the application of international humanitarian law, the protection of civilians and civilian infrastructure, and the pathways available for accountability when international institutions face political deadlock. At the heart of the discussion lies a fundamental question: can international law continue to restrain the use of force in an increasingly fragmented global order? --- Human Rights Institute of the University of Isfahan (HRIUI)
