Songkran in Thailand is known as the biggest water fight in the world, and most travelers head straight to Bangkok for the wildest celebrations. But after attending the Full Moon Party the night before, we decided to experience Songkran in Koh Samui instead and see what a more local, island-style celebration was really like. Songkran is Thailand’s New Year, traditionally symbolizing cleansing, renewal, and fresh beginnings during the hottest time of the year. On Koh Samui, we found a calmer, more intentional version of the festival where locals gently pour water, kids laugh in the streets, and the focus feels more celebratory than chaotic. From walking through water-soaked streets to realizing this might be the best hangover cure imaginable, this ended up being one of our favorite Songkran experiences in Thailand. If you’re wondering: Is Songkran in Koh Samui better than Bangkok? Where is the best place to celebrate Songkran in Thailand? This video shows a different side of the Thai New Year festival that most people don’t talk about. 📍 Filmed in Koh Samui, Thailand 🎉 Songkran Festival (Thai New Year) 🎒 Part of our 100 Adventures travel series If you’re planning a trip to Thailand in April, or deciding where to celebrate Songkran, we hope this helps you choose the experience that’s right for you 🌊✨
