The Fukuro Matsuri (Owl Festival, play on Ikebukuro) is one of northern Tokyo's largest annual autumn celebrations, taking place around Ikebukuro Station's West Exit. Originally established in 1968 to boost local commerce, the high-energy Mikoshi (portable shrine) festival in late September featuring dozens of team-driven shrine parades is one of the main events. Mikoshi (神輿) are sacred, ornate palanquin or portable Shinto shrines used during Japanese festivals (matsuri) to transport a deity (kami) through the surrounding town or neighborhood.
