A German chemist patents an explosive as a medicine. A photographic film company ends up building the largest explosives plant on Earth. A chemistry professor who never wanted to work on weapons solves the problem in three months. This is the story of RDX — the explosive that changed World War II.
In 1898, a German chemist named Georg Friedrich Henning patented a strange white powder, convinced it might be useful as medicine. He was wrong about that — but without knowing it, he had made the most powerful practical military explosive on the planet, and for the next forty years almost nobody touched it. Germany tested it in the 1920s, named it, understood exactly how good it was, and never solved how to manufacture it at scale. By 1940, Britain was desperate for it and asked the United States to build the capacity. The U.S. Army said no. Then a University of Michigan chemistry professor who had never worked with explosives — and didn't want to — cracked the manufacturing problem in three months, and a subsidiary of Eastman Kodak built the largest explosives plant in the world on a river in Tennessee, turning out 858 million pounds of RDX in three years, more than double what Germany could manage every month. That explosive rode inside the bombs that breached the Ruhr dams, the depth charges and torpedoes that turned the Battle of the Atlantic, the bombs that finally sank the battleship Tirpitz, and the explosive lenses that triggered the first atomic bomb at Trinity. Germany invented RDX. America is the one that used it to win the war — and it never really stopped. RDX is still the backbone of C-4 and Semtex today.
