In 2009, paleontologists working in a Colombian coal mine pulled out a fossilized vertebra so big, their first guess was that they'd found a crocodile. They were wrong. It belonged to a snake. And the math that followed was almost impossible to believe.
In this episode of Impossible Biology, we break down Titanoboa, the largest snake ever confirmed to have existed: somewhere between 42 and 50+ feet long, an estimated 2,500 pounds, with a torso roughly as thick as an adult human's waist for its entire length. For comparison, a standard school bus is about 40 feet long.
We go through exactly how scientists reconstructed its size from a handful of bones, why a snake this size could exist 58 million years ago but genuinely cannot exist anywhere on Earth today (the answer isn't evolution, it's temperature), and how an animal this massive actually hunted.
Drop your guesses and reactions in the comments as you watch. There are a few specific questions along the way, and I'm genuinely curious what people think.

👍 If the school bus comparison got you, a like helps a ton.
