At the inaugural ceremony of the Swaralaya Sangeeta Society, held at the Sri Mātreh Building, acclaimed artist Akshara Sriranjani delivered a performance that blended classical music and Indian classical dance.
1. Vocal Invocation: Prarthana Geetam
Composition: Shakti Sahita Ganapatim
Composer: Muttuswami Deekshitār
Genre: Nottuswaram (Celtic/Western-inspired melodic structure set to Sanskrit lyrics in Raga Sankarabharanam)
Description: Akshara opened the ceremony by singing the auspicious prayer song (Prarthana Geetam) dedicated to Lord Ganesha. Her rendering of Deekshitār’s famous Nottuswaram set an invigorating and sacred mood for the ceremony. The crisp, rhythmic flow of Shakti Sahita Ganapatim served as a traditional invocation, blessing the newly founded society.
2. Kuchipudi Dance Recital
Item: Garudagamana Tava
Form: Kuchipudi Classical Dance
Description: Following the vocal invocation, Akshara transitioned into a Kuchipudi dance piece set to the stotram Garudagamana Tava. Embodying the attributes of Lord Vishnu, her performance combined expressive Abhinaya (facial expressions) with precise Nritta (footwork and mudras). The choreography highlighted the grandeur of the deity mounted on Garuda, translating the devotional Sanskrit verses into visual storytelling that resonated with the audience.
