But here is the secret: behind the fountain hides the Giardini dell'Acqua Paola, a garden that opens right onto the fountain's own terrace. And this summer you can walk in — and lean out literally from inside the fountain, with all of Rome at your feet: the domes, the rooftops, the whole city turning golden at sunset. It is, quite simply, one of the most breathtaking views Rome can offer. The occasion is a book crossing: throughout August and September, the garden hosts a free book exchange — bring a book you've read, leave it, take another home. No cards, no registration, no ticket.
