Everyone photographs this fountain. Almost no one knows you can actually step inside it.
High on the Janiculum Hill stands the Fontanone — "the big fountain" — the monumental Fontana dell'Acqua Paola, built between 1610 and 1614 for Pope Paul V Borghese as the grand finale of the ancient Trajan aqueduct, its marble taken from the ruins of the Roman Forum of Nerva. Romans have loved it for four centuries; cinema lovers know it from the opening scene of "La Grande Bellezza".
But here is the secret: behind the fountain hides the Giardini dell'Acqua Paola, a garden that opens right onto the fountain's own terrace. And this summer you can walk in — and lean out literally from inside the fountain, with all of Rome at your feet: the domes, the rooftops, the whole city turning golden at sunset. It is, quite simply, one of the most breathtaking views Rome can offer.
The occasion is a book crossing: throughout August and September, the garden hosts a free book exchange — bring a book you've read, leave it, take another home. No cards, no registration, no ticket. Just books, sunset, and Rome lighting up beneath you.
