Founded during the 1905 Anti-Partition and Swadeshi movements as an indigenous alternative to British colonial education, Jadavpur University began through two nationalist bodies: the National Council of Education (NCE), Bengal—which set up the Bengal National College (BNC) under Sri Aurobindo Ghosh—and the Society for the Promotion of Technical Education (SPTE), which established the Bengal Technical Institute (BTI) under Pramatha Nath Bose. Guided by principles of national self-reliance, vernacular pedagogy, and integrated technical training, SPTE merged into NCE in 1910, unifying their literary, scientific, and engineering programs. Rejecting British grants to maintain complete autonomy, the institution was funded through major Indian philanthropy, including donations from Raja Subodh Chandra Mallik, Brajendra Kishore Roy Chowdhury, Maharaja Suryya Kanto Acharya Chowdhury, Sir Taraknath Palit, and a pivotal ₹10 Lakh endowment in 1921 from Sir Rash Behari Ghosh. Originally operating from Bowbazar Street and Parsi Bagan (92 Upper Circular Road), the institute secured a 33-acre lease in Jadavpur in 1924 with help from Calcutta Mayor Deshbandhu Chittaranjan Das. BTI was renamed the College of Engineering and Technology (CET) in 1928, before being formally reconstituted on December 24, 1955, as Jadavpur University under the Jadavpur University Act, with Dr. Triguna Sen serving as its founding Vice-Chancellor and Dr. Bidhan Chandra Roy as Chief Minister.
