This is a Sonic Heroes ring attack of Team Rose on Hang Castle. I did way better in previous attempts of this run, so I'm just gonna blame it on fatigue. It should never take more than an hour to complete a Sonic stage, even though most of the duration is due to the tedious thunder shooting section.
timestamps:
00:00 - Rainbow Rings/Beginning of Stage
16:00 - Flight Jump (Skip)
20:25 - Bypassing Goal Ring
25:35 - Bop boost setup (Skip)
27:30 - 1st Bop boost
29:05 - ThunderShoot Section 1 (Skip)
43:30 - Landing
44:30 - 2nd Bop boost
57:00 - ThunderShoot Section 2 (Skip)
1:25:00 - Getting to Goal Ring
I added timestamps so it'll be easier to skip the unnecessary parts, and those who wish to see the excruciating process can play those parts at 2x or 3x speed. I'll definitely redo this run in the future and collect the rings in the order I see them, rather than by stage progression, to help reduce the duration of this run. Also, it's never taken me 5 mins to do that super flight jump at 20:35.
I started by getting the 2 wide rainbow ring sets first; if I mess up on them, I can restart early on instead of at the end of the run.
Rainbow Rings:
To collect the rainbow rings, perform a Homing Attack with Amy and Cream, approaching them diagonally to the right. Position Amy in the center and Cream to the right; Big will then fall into the left ring. Alternatively, you can have Amy go for the right ring and Cream in the center, depending on what you're most comfortable with.
The running section down the upside-down castle has a sloped collision, making it difficult to position the characters accurately as they tend to slide. To help stabilize your footing, using the Tornado Hammer can be effective. Ensure that Amy and Cream are positioned on the square-patterned area, while Big should be located on the lower part.
After you get those rainbow rings, you can perform Amy's Hammer glitch at the end of the stage to fall back to another section of the stage since the endpoint of the stage is positioned so high above. This stage is very backward progression-friendly, so you can really start anywhere, although I recommend starting with the rainbow rings.
The Ring Trail:
The long ring trail consists of separate ring objects, each group having different draw distances. The switch and ring group objects at the beginning of the trail will disappear once you reach the second castle's distance in the gap section. To get them to reload, you must return and activate the switch, as they are linked objects. That's why I have to tackle it from two spots.
Bop Boosts:
To set up the Bop Boost, position yourself in front of the torch. Then, perform a thundershoot with Amy, sending her outside of the castle. Make sure to ascend before landing. Amy will return and be knocked into the bop boost state while Cream is still in the air. Press and hold the ascend button again while moving the analog stick away from the speed character—specifically, to the left in this case. This will grant you a significant speed boost and jump before you exit the castle. Afterward, initiate flight and quickly perform a thundershoot to cancel the boost.
The first boost isn't really necessary, as you can perform a team blast and rocket accel. However, to collect all the required rings, you'll need to use a significant amount of your flight energy, which I prefer not to do.
If you pay attention at 27:47, you'll see that the rings eventually split and become out of sync while spinning. This is a clear indication of where the ends and beginnings of two separate ring group objects meet. To succeed, make sure to collect all the synchronized rings closest to the characters before returning to the stage. You’ll know you’ve gathered them all when you activate the switch again and find that there are no rings in sight, as seen at 44:20.
For the second boost, when you jump out of the castle, move diagonally to the left. Make sure to get far enough to enter the draw distance of the other rings before initiating the bop boost; otherwise, the rings won’t appear. I messed up on the second boost at 45:48 because I did thundershot a bit late.
Note: Usually, the power character gets stuck in mid-air when you cancel a bop boost, so you only have one character to thundershoot, which takes longer to travel. You can also get another flight by running into the torch, with a shield active, on the other side of the entryway. However, I decided not to do that because I didn't want to risk failing the flight jump at the end of that section. I'll link a video below from a previous attempt where I did use that strat.
I'll redo this run and see if I can find a bop boost position that allows me to collect all the rings in one thundershoot section and reach the torch for an extra flight. For now, though, I’m heading to Egg Fleet and then ending with Bullet Station.
