Christ is sufficient. Pastor Blaine continues our study through Galatians in Galatians 2, showing us that our righteousness doesn’t come from what we do, but through faith in Jesus Christ. As we explore the doctrine of justification by faith, we’re reminded that Christ alone is enough.
Galatians 2:15-21
We ourselves are Jews by birth and not Gentile sinners; yet we know that a person is not justified by works of the law but through faith in Jesus Christ, so we also have believed in Christ Jesus, in order to be justified by faith in Christ and not by works of the law, because by works of the law no one will be justified.
But if, in our endeavor to be justified in Christ, we too were found to be sinners, is Christ then a servant of sin? Certainly not! For if I rebuild what I tore down, I prove myself to be a transgressor. For through the law I died to the law, so that I might live to God. I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me. I do not nullify the grace of God, for if righteousness were through the law, then Christ died for no purpose.
Sermon Notes
Main Idea: Christ Alone Is Sufficient for All Our Righteousness
I. We Are Declared Right before God by Faith
II. We Are Made Dead to the Law by the Cross
III. We Are Living Righteous to God by Christ
Discussion Questions:
1. What does it mean to be justified by faith, and why is justification important for the Christian?
2. How is justification different from sanctification and glorification? Why is it important that we understand the distinction between these three aspects of our salvation?
3. In Galatians 2:20, Paul says that he has been “crucified with Christ” and that Christ lives in him. What does it mean for us to be both “dead” to our old life and “alive” through Christ? What might that look like in our everyday lives?
4. Pastor Blaine said that true faith is not perfect faith. So, what constitutes genuine faith in Christ? What does true faith look like in the life of a believer?
