In this episode, Gary Kent and historian Daniel Reynaud explore the incredible lives of Anzac Chaplains—men who were theoretically non-combatants but in reality lived, suffered, and died alongside the troops. We uncover the story of Captain Andrew Gillison, who gave his life rescuing wounded men from the scrub under heavy fire, and "Fighting Mac," who became a legend among the Diggers. These padres worked 18-hour days, moving from hospital beaches to the steepest cliffs, often becoming the only source of hope for men facing the "meat grinder" of war. This detailed look at WWI history reveals that beneath the tough exterior of the Australian soldier was often a deep sense of God and moral law. Through historical records and moving diaries, we see how these chaplains bridged the gap between the horrors of the trenches and the peace of faith.
