Super El Niño 2026 explained: why this year brought a cancelled fishing season in Peru, Indonesia's worst fires in a decade, no Atlantic hurricane before October and 92% less monsoon rain in Karachi, and how one record-hot patch of the Pacific Ocean links them all.
We start with the Peruvian fishermen who named El Niño after the Christmas child more than a hundred years ago. Then we explain how it works, simply: from a cup of chai to why rain follows warm water. We follow its effects around the world: the Panama Canal that runs on rain, the hurricanes that couldn't stand up, Indonesia's fires and our own monsoon. Then come the records, and the strangest fact of all: how an El Niño once made Earth's day longer. Finally, the real story: why scientists say El Niño only opens the door to heat the ocean has already stored, why 2027 could break the record, and why this one peaks in December.
In this video:
• Four strange events, one cause
• The fishermen who named El Niño
• Why Peru cancelled its anchovy season, the world's biggest fishery
• How El Niño works, explained with a cup of chai
• Why rain follows warm water
• The Panama Canal: why a canal needs rain
• The Atlantic hurricanes that never came
• Indonesia's fires
• What it did to the monsoon in Pakistan and India
• A record-hot Pacific, and an ocean record in the wrong month
• How El Niño made Earth's day longer
• The real story: stored heat, and why 2027 could break the record
Sources named in the video include:
• climate and oceans: NOAA, Copernicus (C3S), the WMO and Carbon Brief;
• the events: SeafoodSource, The Guardian, AP, The Weather Channel, Down To Earth, Al Jazeera/AFP;
• the monsoon: the Pakistan Meteorological Department and the India Meteorological Department;
• the day-length research: Lambert, Marcus & de Viron, Earth System Dynamics (2017).
Forecasts are probabilities, not certainties. PMD calls El Niño a major cause of this year's monsoon deficit, not the only one.
