He kept the oath until the oath stopped meaning anything.
The villages were burning. The gods never answered. So he reached for the weapon his temple feared and became the thing standing between the kingdom and extinction.
The problem isn’t that the cursed blade changed him. It’s that somewhere between monster hunting and saving the realm, he started enjoying what it let him become. When the Ashen King finally falls, he feels neither justice nor relief—only the realization that he liked the fight.
“The Gods Returned My Oath” is for anyone who stopped waiting to be saved and then wondered what surviving had turned them into.

'The Gods Returned My Oath'
I found the blade beneath the ice
Where old kings went to disappear
Buried deep with broken crowns
And all the names we do not hear
The runes were worn, the steel was black
The edge still hungry after years
I took it home and fed it blood
And watched it wake beneath my hands
The temple called it blasphemy
The elders called it ancient shame
They spoke of chains and sacred laws
Like laws had ever stopped a grave
The north was dying village by village
Raiders burning through the snow
The gods were busy somewhere else
So I became what they were not
I gave my oath to silent gods
And got back silence in return
So when the darkness crossed the mountains
I let the whole damn altar burn
Now every prayer they ever taught me
Falls apart inside my chest
The gods returned my oath that night
And I returned the rest
The first beast died outside the walls
The second died beside the sea
The third one begged me for its life
In a language known only to me
Each victory came easier
Each killing felt less strange
The monster's blood upon my hands
Began to feel like home again
Then winter brought the Ashen King
A thing of hunger, teeth, and frost
The kind of enemy that leaves
Entire bloodlines marked as lost
We fought three days beneath the storm
Steel and shadow, bone and fire
And when I finally took his head
I felt something I desired
Not relief
Not peace
Not justice
Not pride
Just the awful understanding
That I had enjoyed the ride
I gave my oath to silent gods
And got back silence in return
So now I walk beyond their judgment
And watch their sacred banners burn
The kingdom still stands behind me
The dead still sleep beneath the snow
But every year I understand
Why that old blade chose me long ago
