In 1984, the Philadelphia 76ers reportedly offered Dr. J to the Chicago Bulls for the draft pick that became Michael Jordan. How close did this actually come to happening? Sixers owner Harold Katz thought the teams were close. Rod Thorn’s later account didn’t match that version. Then there’s the other offer, involving Andrew Toney and the pick Philadelphia eventually used on Charles Barkley. We go back to the 1984 NBA Draft to sort through the story and imagine what either deal could have meant. Jordan and Barkley starting their careers together in Philadelphia. Or a young Jordan joining Dr. J and Moses Malone on a team that already knew how to win. Both were possible paths. But you can’t keep every player and every draft pick. Would you have given up Dr. J for the chance to draft Jordan? Let me know in the comments.
