Episode 423
Stan (Bernard Youens) collects paper for his business from Val (Anne Reid) who expresses interest in Hilda’s (Jean Alexander) fortune-telling abilities. David (Alan Rothwell) apologises to Stan for leaving him and Hilda in the kitchen while Val suspects David's leg injury is feigned. Ken (Bill Roache) avoids asking Irma (Sandra Gough) about her relationship with David. Hilda helps Irma in the corner shop due to Florrie's (Betty Alberge) illness. Elsie (Pat Phoenix) also seeks a reading from Hilda. Ena (Violet Carson) scoffs at Hilda's fortune-telling. Val confirms her suspicions about David to Ken. Albert (Jack Howarth) is exhausted from collecting paper. Ken dismisses Hilda’s readings as a joke. Stan, Charlie (Gordon Rollings) and Albert disrupt the reading when they bring masses of paper and card into the house. Hilda gives Val a reading and deduces from the cards that Val is going to have twins. Ena and Elsie become hesitant. Val reveals the reading to Ken. A reporter calls about David. Ena receives a letter from her landlord. Ken finds David has left for the evening. Len (Peter Adamson) breaks the news of David's suspension and suspected bribery. Ken punches Len upon hearing Len's implication that bribery runs in the family.
