The Sahara Desert was not always a vast land of sand and scorching heat.
Thousands of years ago, much of the Sahara was a surprisingly green world filled with rivers, lakes, grasslands, wildlife, and human settlements. Ancient rock art and evidence buried beneath the desert reveal a forgotten chapter in Earth’s climate history.
So what happened?
In this documentary, we travel back through time to explore the Green Sahara, also known as the African Humid Period. We uncover the ancient rivers and lakes that once crossed North Africa, the enormous Mega-Chad, the wildlife that lived around these waters, and the climate changes that gradually transformed this green landscape into the Sahara we know today.
We’ll also explore how Earth’s orbital changes influenced the African monsoon, why rainfall moved farther north, how the Sahara became greener, and what caused the climate system to shift again.
The Sahara’s story is more than just a story about a desert. It is a reminder that Earth’s climate and landscapes are never truly still.
