Every technique that makes RTL faster spends something else. Here's how duplication, precomputation and wider structures each buy speed, and what they actually cost. 🎯 In this video • Duplication and precomputation: duplicating a high-fanout register cuts loads per copy at the cost of one flop per copy; precomputing both outcomes and selecting late turns a late signal into just a mux drive, for about double the logic; carry-select computes the upper half for both possible carries, trading two adders for speed • Wider and deeper structures: wider issue and datapaths do more work per cycle but area and switching scale with width; more register-file or memory ports grow area much faster than the port count; bigger buffers, queues and caches cut stalls at the cost of area and leakage; bypass networks and extra pipeline stages cut waiting or raise the clock, at the cost of wide muxes and more flops • The common thread: every one of these buys cycle time or throughput by spending area, power, or both — there's no free speedup ⏱️ Chapters 0:00 Interview Question: RTL Speed, Area and Power 1:04 Duplication and Precomputation 2:44 Wider and Deeper Structures 4:44 Recap 🚀 Preparing for an ASIC / VLSI / digital design interview?
