This WHITE OAK Almost Overpowered My New Hydraulic Sawmill!

Today we’re turning another massive piece of Hurricane Helene white oak into a beautiful custom fireplace mantel! Our customer needs a 6.5” x 13” rough-cut white oak beam, 65” long, that he can finish down to 5.5” x 12”. Sounds simple enough, right? Well, this incredibly dense, heavy white oak had other plans! Getting this monster onto our new Norwood HD38 hydraulic sawmill was a challenge in itself. Between the weight, large knots, and a few hidden surprises near the heart, this log definitely put our equipment to the test! After getting everything squared up and milled to size, we discovered some absolutely beautiful white oak hiding inside. With 16 feet of lumber to choose from, our customer got to pick the perfect section for his fireplace mantel. But before calling it a day, we had to do one final GRAIN REVEAL, and this white oak did not disappoint!
