An American company born from MIT research is turning discarded plastic waste into structural building components that can outperform wood in strength.
Atlas Building Composites combines recycled plastic with fiberglass and uses large-scale robotic 3D printing to create trusses, decks, bridge components, and other structural parts. The technology has already been used in real projects, including a 40-foot bridge for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
Could plastic waste eventually replace some of the lumber used to build American homes?
