Located in the center of Romania, in Sibiu, the ASTRA National Museum Complex is the most important ethno-museum institution in Romania. Conceived under the auspices of the Transylvanian Association for Romanian Literature and Culture of the Romanian People - an institution founded in 1861 - the ASTRA Museum - then the Association Museum - opened its first exhibition on August 19, 1905. The museum was born from the desire of Transylvanian Romanians to define their own ethnocultural identity, in the ethnic conglomerate of the Austro-Hungarian Empire and against the backdrop of the cultural emancipation of all the peoples of central and southeastern Europe.
