In nineteen forty-four, one factory in Michigan could build a bomber every hour. Today, almost nothing of it is left. This is the story of fifteen American factories that built the ships, steel, cars, power, cloth, meat, sugar, and washing machines of a nation, and what stands on the ground where they once were. In this video: Willow Run Bomber Plant, Kaiser Richmond Shipyards, Fore River Shipyard, Kaiser Steel in Fontana, Homestead Works, Bethlehem Steel, Sparrows Point, Campbell Works in Youngstown, Dodge Main, the Packard Plant, Westinghouse in East Pittsburgh, Amoskeag Mills, the Union Stock Yards, the Domino Sugar Refinery, and Maytag in Newton, Iowa. Some are shopping centers now. One is a casino. One is a racetrack. One is a park built from old sugar machinery. Which of these places is closest to where you grew up? Tell me in the comments if your family worked in a factory like these, and where. If you enjoy stories about the American places and products that shaped the country, subscribe so you do not miss the next one. #lostfactories #americanhistory #industrialhistory
