The internet feels intangible — until a cable breaks on the ocean floor. This documentary follows the specialised ships, crews and engineering systems used to find, recover, splice, test and return damaged submarine fibre-optic cables to the seabed. From fishing gear and ship anchors to fault localisation, reflectometry, ROVs, grapnels, fusion splicing and controlled cable layback, repairing the physical backbone of the internet is a precision operation carried out across an enormous and hostile environment. Submarine telecommunications cables carry more than 99% of international data traffic. Around 150–200 submarine telecom cable faults occur globally each year, and most are caused by accidental human activity such as fishing and ship anchors rather than sabotage. This is Silent Backbone. The systems keeping the world running.
