A wooden lure with a baitfish-like silver flash. A twitch or two brings it to life… then it sits on the surface. That's when a carp strikes! This time on Craft Fishing Lures, I build a floating wooden baitfish lure, covering its surface with aluminum tape to mimic the reflective sheen of a small fish. The inspiration came from wakasagi, or Japanese smelt, at a lake I often fish. After spawning, some die and float on the surface, where bass and trout feed on them. I kept the ballast light and positioned it low in the body so the finished lure would still float after clear coating and attaching the hooks. It can be twitched, retrieved steadily, or left sitting on the surface between movements. Watch the build, my first underwater footage, and the moment a carp emerges from a gap in the concrete to take the lure during the pause. Its body shimmered gold in the morning sun—a catch I won't forget! Is this style of surface fishing common where you live? Let me know in the comments!
