The traditional “food versus fuel” debate, which views biofuel production as competing with food security, is increasingly giving way to a more nuanced approach—“food and fuel together.” With greater emphasis on surplus agricultural produce, damaged and non-food-grade grains, sugarcane by-products, agricultural residues and second-generation biofuels, India is expanding the feedstock base for ethanol without compromising its food priorities.
