Wednesday, October 7 | LORD, I'M SORRY for the Years I Can't Undo | Morning Prayer for Grace

A shoebox tumbles from the top shelf of a hall closet, and a whole life spills across the hallway carpet. There's a son's graduation photo from the morning of a hard argument, a mother in a hospital bed after visits that kept getting postponed, and a husband laughing at a picnic in a season when he needed more kindness. At the bottom of the pile is a letter of apology to a sister, written twenty years ago and never sent. This morning prayer is for every heart carrying regret over the years it cannot undo. We learn that we cannot scrub away our own past. Like a pencil eraser pressed too hard, scrubbing only wears holes in the page. But God doesn't erase our story. He writes grace over it. We discover the difference between godly sorrow, which leads us to Jesus, and worldly sorrow, which circles in despair. Regret that leads you to Jesus is a gift, and regret that keeps you from Him is a thief. We walk with Peter to a second fire of coals on the beach, where Jesus gave his worst failure a new ending and a new purpose. Then we bring every regret honestly to the Lord: as parents, in marriage, toward our parents, in broken friendships, in wandering years, secrets, money, health, words, and the people our choices have hurt. That includes the forgiveness we have withheld from ourselves. Pray along with the refrain, "Your mercy reaches farther back than my regret," and take one small step forward in grace today.
