The Battle of Ulundi, 4 July 1879. Five months after Isandlwana, Lord Chelmsford marched around 5,000 men onto an open plain in front of the Zulu capital, formed them into a hollow square, and waited to be attacked. Half an hour later the war was effectively decided.
This is the last major battle of the Anglo-Zulu War: why Chelmsford was racing his own replacement to get there, why King Cetshwayo's army attacked a square it could not break, and what happened when the 17th Lancers rode out.
In this video:
Chelmsford, Wolseley and the cable that was ignored
The death of the Prince Imperial
The reconnaissance across the White Mfolozi and three Victoria Crosses
The square: rifles, artillery and Gatling guns on all four sides
"Go at them, Lowe!" and the burning of oNdini
Why Ulundi worked, and why the casualty figures are still disputed
