He discusses the aspirations of the makers of Jamia and particularly, the remarkable contributions of eminent scholars and academicians in the field of Islamic Studies and research. Jamia Millia Islamia appeared at a very critical juncture of history when the whole country was under the despotism of British imperialism and facing great turmoil. In the backdrop of the educational, political, and socio-religious scenario, the three trends namely the Deoband movement of Islamic education, the Aligarh movement of religious cum modern education, and the patriotic movement of the feeling of love and sense of attachment to the motherland allied with the Khilafat and the Non-Cooperation gravitated together with Mahatama Gandhi as a catalyst contributed towards the birth of Jamia Millia Islamia, familiarly known as “Jamia.” DR JAVED AKHATAR is currently a Guest Faculty in the Department of Islamic Studies, Jamia Millia Islamia, a Central University, New Delhi, where he is teaching Islamic Studies. He graduated in the Science stream. He holds a master’s degree in Islamic Studies and has received his Ph.D. degree in Islamic Studies from JMI.
