In Numbers 16 a plague had broken out among the people of Israel. The very people who had accused Moses and Aaron were now dying. Moses instructed Aaron to take his censer, put fire from the altar and incense in it, and make atonement for the people. And Aaron ran into the middle of the congregation. He ran towards people who had rejected his authority and spoken against him. He stood between the dead and the living, and the plague stopped. Their words were filled with accusation but Aaron’s hands were filled with incense. Even as they resisted him, he moved towards them with mercy. This extraordinary scene points us to Jesus. The eternal Son of God stepped into our humanity. He entered our suffering, came near to the broken and walked willingly towards the cross. He came to where we were because we could never rescue ourselves. Aaron carried incense from the altar yet Jesus gave Himself as the sacrifice for our sins. This Sunday we will see how this dramatic scene in the wilderness speaks to the present function of the church. We will see that what Aaron did is fulfilled in Jesus, who in turn defines a similar ministry of the church today.
